What Is at Risk

Proposed federal budget cuts threaten SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) through significant funding restrictions, expanded work requirements, and limitations on what recipients can purchase. SNAP provides vital assistance to 42 million American's facing food insecurity. In Michigan, 1.4 million people rely on various SNAP benefits to access healthy food and meet their essential needs.

  • Approximately 1 in 7 Michiganders participate in SNAP.
  • 1 in 10 Michigan workers uses SNAP to feed their families, and the majority of SNAP participants who can work, do work. Roughly 4 in 5 Michigan SNAP families have at least one working person.
  • 41,000 veterans in Michigan participate in SNAP. Michigan consistently has one of the highest rates of SNAP participation by veterans in the nation.
  • 18% of children in Michigan have food insecurity.

SNAP Educates Communities

In addition to helping low-income families afford nutritious food, SNAP also educates people on how to stretch their SNAP dollars, cook healthy meals, and lead a physically active lifestyle. Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education (SNAP-Ed) funding supports nutrition education and obesity prevention programming right here in Kent County! Watch the videos below to see two ways SNAP-ed dollars have benefited our community.
